During my school career, be it Elementary, Secondary or College, I have come across many teachers with many different styles. Some teachers were great and some not so great. While thinking about these teachers I reflect about my own philosophies on educational technology.
I find I am driven towards a pragmatist philosophical school of education. During my school days I often questioned the use of some of the things I learned. For example, I knew for a long time that I was going to major in music, and I never understood why I was going to need Biology. I have found over the years that if students question a class’s use then they do not learn effectively.
The teacher and learner both have a responsibility to each other. The teacher’s role in education is to make sure that their students have a complete understanding of their subject. A student will not be successful if they do not grasp the concepts being taught. In turn, the learner’s role in education is to make sure they do understand. If learning is not being achieved then the teacher and learner have to take the necessary to steps to make sure learning is taking place.
I became a teacher for the opportunity to work with kids. I feel it is my responsibility to prepare students for adulthood through the use of “real world” educational experiences.
Having my philosophy written down shows me what kind of a teacher I am and want to be. Until this past year I had never kept a blog before. It is quite an amazing thing. Putting your thoughts out in a journal that others can read and comment too is an interesting way to see others views on the world. I have never had any contact with blogging in the classroom setting. I can imagine it would be a great way from students to learn.
In Downes article the biggest thing that stood out to me was the fact that students assumptions that everything on the internet is true. I had never thought about the fact that most of these students have always had the internet and there are so many things on the internet that I've seen that are wrong. As educators using technology we have to make sure students are seeking good and correct information from the internet.
My expectations for this coarse it to learn the different facets of Educational Technology and how I can use them in the classroom.
